10 April 18 - International Pay Equity Day

On Tuesday, April 10, AUPE recognized Equal Pay Day. This day is an internationally recognized day to bring attention to wage inequalities that exist throughout the world. Canadian recognition of the day was founded by the National Committee on Pay Equity in 1996. It is special in the Province of Alberta as AUPE continues to push for legislation on Wage Equity.

To draw attention to the issue, the AUPE Pay and Social Equity Committee asked all of our members to “WEAR RED! ” Equal Pay day is the symbolic day when women’s earnings catch up to men’s earnings from the previous year or basically 15 months for women compared to men’s 12 months. The idea of this is to recognize that many people, namely women, immigrants and indigenous people, often are considered to be “in the red” financially due to the inequity in wages.

Thank you to our Finance Department members pictured above and all the Local 039 members that wore red to support this action.
