Local 053 Applies for Mediation
Your bargaining committee has reached an impasse in negotiations and has applied for mediation to seek assistance in securing a fair settlement with the University.
On Sept. 7, your committee received a package from the University that does not value you and the work you do, despite including a contracting out article to replace the current LOU and a letter of understanding on reviewing positions currently excluded from the CBA. The settlement offer from the University was in response to the comprehensive package submitted by your bargaining team during meetings on Aug. 20 and 21.
Outstanding Monetary Items
Regarding your salary, the University has proposed two years of zero percent salary increases for July 1, 2017 and July 1 2018 and a wage re-opener for July 1, 2019. They also proposed a $150 increase to your flexible spending account during the final six months of the proposed 3 year agreement. This would amount to approximately $60,000 in new spending for the University during the proposed 3 year agreement The University indicated they had no interest in dealing with other Union monetary proposals such as vacation improvements.
However, as of last year’s budget, the employer had accumulated a surplus of $206 million, which they claim can not be used to support the needs of the Local 53 membership. The bargaining team feels this is an insult to the hard working front line staff as the University was able to allocate fund to improve the working terms for it’s Administrative Professional Officers.
This is unacceptable. You deserve a collective agreement that reflects the importance of the work you do. Our research shows the University certainly has the ability compensate you fairly, and your bargaining team is committed to making sure that happens.
