4 April 18 - Equal Pay Day is Tuesday April 10, 2018

WEAR RED!

Sisters and Brothers,

I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Committee, to thank you for your continued support of the work that the Alberta Union of Provincial Employee’s (AUPE) Pay and Social Equity Standing Committee does on your behalf.

The Committee is entering into a new year of activism and wants to continue to bring events and issues to your attention that can help all of our members.

On Tuesday, April 10, AUPE will be recognizing Equal Pay Day. This day is an internationally recognized day to bring attention to wage inequalities that exist throughout the world. Canadian recognition of the day was founded by the National Committee on Pay Equity in 1996. It is special in the Province of Alberta as AUPE continues to push for legislation on Wage Equity.

To draw attention to the issue, the AUPE Pay and Social Equity Committee is asking for all of our members to “WEAR RED! ” Equal Pay day is the symbolic day when women’s earnings catch up to men’s earnings from the previous year or basically 15 months for women compared to men’s 12 months. The idea of this is to recoginize that many people, namely women, immigrants and indigenous people, often are considered to be “in the red” financially due to the inequity in wages.

The Committee would love to have every member wear red this day. We would also love to have every member wearing red to take pictures and post them to our Facebook pages: Albertans for Pay Equity and the AUPE Pay and Social Equity Committee.

The Committee would encourage you to put this message out to your coleagues, family and friends to further the call for Wage Equity in Alberta. It will take all of us to make change when we speak of fairness and equity in our wages.

I look forward to seeing the pictures and hearing the conversation around the impact that this one day campaign accomplishes. Posts can be made to Facebook Pages: “AUPE Pay and Social Equity Committee” and “Albertans for Pay Equity”
